The Pierce family took a disadvantaged youth for the summer, Steve Genelli and he and Randy became lifelong friends. They played junior tennis, had adventures and went to Yale. Randy protested the Vietnam War, while Steve joined the Marine Corps. An explosion in an underground bomb factory sent Randy into hiding with Steve in the East Village. They worked at a local community center, had a rent strike with their slum landlord and were evicted by the police. They worked with homeless youth, until some of the kids got into trouble and forced the program to end. Randy and Steve resolved to find another way to work with homeless youth.
